TBH and no offense, the IT symbol has gone down hill. It has become more software based and moved away from hardware base. They are more likely to throw something out than troubleshoot it. In reality most of these big companies just have extra computers lying around. If one is "broken", toss it out. Some don't even try to troubleshoot.
Right now, I have moved to a new company which has pretty outdated computers. They keep on trying to by old Dells and Gateways, talking about DDR days, not even DDR2. And its costing them $150 each. Its not a company that needs top of the line, something to do basic work. Word processing, simple CAD drawings, and browsing the internet when the boss is not looking. I am trying to convince the boss to let me build computers for them, although its not my department. The IT guy is solid with software and server grade hardware, but no clue about consumer based. And when I say server grade, means he just know which pre-built servers to buy.
That's my rant, to add on I think people are moving away from using their hands, to feel and build.
